Moomers business up since scooping the competitionBy Carrie Henderson When it comes to America’s favorite ice cream, Moomers is one scoop above the rest. And now it’s more popular than ever. Since receiving national recognition, sales have gone up more than 15 percent, and have put Traverse City on the map. ABC’s Good Morning America held a contest for the best ice cream in the country last month. After narrowing it down to four finalists and 50,000 votes later, Moomers was named “America’s Best Scoops.” Owner Nancy Plummer remembers when she got the phone call that her small-town ice cream shop had won. “I screamed and jumped up and down, as did our employees, while the customers cheered.” One day later, Plummer, along with her son, Jon, who manages the business, and a store full of customers were live on national television being interviewed about Moomers’ sweet success. Along with more traffic through the door, Plummer says since winning the award they also have shipped ice cream to customers in several states, including Colorado, New Jersey, and New York. One of those East coast customers was Good Morning America’s host Diane Sawyer. “The production manager from GMA called and said that Sawyer had requested some of the award-winning ice cream,” says Plummer. “We sent three pints of Cherries MOO-bilee overnight air.” Even though Moomers is receiving national attention, don’t expect it to go “global” any time soon. “We are not looking to sell our ice cream on a national basis,” says Plummer. “We plan to remain a pretty local business.” But it’s not only ice cream that people are ordering. T-shirt sales and web site hits have also increased since winning top honors. Plummer says she has thought about having special T-shirts made reflecting the award, but just hasn’t had time to act on the idea yet. This summer Moomers is celebrating 11 years of scooping up some of the best ice cream in the area, and now the nation. Along with its famous Cherries MOO-bilee, it also has some new flavors that include banana peanut butter, lemon biscotti, and key lime. Even after the last scoop of ice cream is gone for the season, the staff of Moomers says it will always remember this award, and even has a four-legged reminder. In May, a new calf was born on the Plummer farm. They named it Marysol – after the GMA reporter who made the special trip to Traverse City just for some Moomers ice cream. BN |
