New Partners in Childcare: AngelWorks and Angel Care
TRAVERSE CITY – AngelWorks, a local nonprofit that worked to raise money for low-income Grand Traverse area residents to be able to access quality – and affordable – childcare recently merged with one such provider, Angel Care Preschool and Child Care. In combining their efforts, Angel Care representatives feel they now have a stronger voice in the community promoting quality childcare for every child – regardless of economics.
Angel Care, also a nonprofit, offers childcare from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days a week for up to 40 children, ages six weeks to six years, at any one time. With full-time, part-time and half-day options, one of the program’s hallmarks is its flexible scheduling, according to executive director Karin Cooney.
Sid Van Slyke and his wife have two young children at the facility. He says the part-time, flexible care first attracted them to the center, and the care has kept them there. Angel Care is governed by a board of directors that includes early childhood advocates and experts. Van Slyke also serves on the board as a parent representative.
One of the unique qualities of the facility is up to 50 percent of its families can be receiving state and/or federal assistance. It is the only childcare center locally that opens up its program to that significant a percentage, according to Cooney, recognizing the importance of offering quality preschool and childcare to low-income families.
The center offers a Head Start curriculum, access to community resources and a farm to table food program, including Moomers milk and local produce. The cost of that program is not passed along to families.
Fall enrollment is underway and there are scholarships available to current and potential clients. As an example, a standard rate of $175 per week for an infant could be as little as $35 per week following state assistance and financial aid through AngelWorks, says Cooney.
Angel Care Preschool and Child Care is located at 834 Hastings St. in Traverse City next to the Father Fred Foundation.
