Sassy’s departing downtown, Morsels bakery to come; Catch Island Grill opens

The owner of The Sassy Sandwich won’t reopen her popular sandwich shop in downtown Traverse City this May.

Instead, a year-round bakery, Morsels, will be opening at the corner of Cass and Front the week of April 7.  Jeff and Misha Neidorfler’s bakery will sell coffee, tea and morsel-sized bakery items.

“It’s a new concept. All of our offerings will be the size of two bites,” said Misha Neidorfler, whose father is Jeff Corbin, founder of Corbin Design in Traverse City.  “We might sell sandwiches, too, but we won’t make them on site.”

The inside of the eatery will be gutted to look “completely different.” Seating inside will consist of two tables with stools, and the quality of the outdoor seating will improve, she said.

The Neidorflers are moving to Traverse City from Milwaukee, where they’ve lived since 1996. They will employ six to eight people and will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to early afternoon throughout the summer.

Sassy’s owner Sharon Wise said the stale economy is the major reason she chose to not renew her lease.

“I’m hoping a year-round business will be able to prosper at the site,” she said. “I loved having the location open May through October for three years, but with the economic conditions being what they are, the location couldn't sustain itself for the entire year.”

Wise’s year-round sandwich shop at Copper Ridge will remain open and unaffected.

Also in downtown Traverse City, Kurt Fischer’s new Caribbean-inspired restaurant has opened at 120 Park Street, former home of Pete’s Pub & Grille.

Catch Island Grill offers a mid-priced steak and seafood menu, extensive kids menu, full bar, and a “small but unique” wine list. It will be open for dinner Sunday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 4 p.m. to midnight.  They will start serving lunch in May and will eventually open their outdoor patio.
