Deerfield.com makes ‘The List’
GAYLORD – Deerfield.com has been named one of the fastest-growing, private companies in the country by Inc. magazine.
The Gaylord-based company ranked 116th in the Inc. 500, the prestigious annual listing of companies that are changing the face of American business. Noteworthy alumni include Microsoft, Timberland, Dominos Pizza and Patagonia.
The software marketing and distribution company is one of only 14 companies in Michigan to make the exclusive list. According to the Oct. 17 article, Deerfield.com’s sales were $13,792,000 last year, up from $693,000 in 1995–an increase of 1,890 percent. They started out with six employees in ’95, and now boast 51.

Deerfield was launched in 1994 as an outgrowth of Deerfield Computer Associates, a regional computer hardware and software system integrator. The company now specializes in Internet software solutions designed to leverage Internet connectivity for consumers and small- to medium-sized businesses.
Deerfield.com publishes such products as “DNS2Go,” a free Internet domain naming system service; “WinGate” and “InterQuick” for optimizing Internet sharing and connectivity; “MDaemon,” “MailScan for MDaemon,” “WorldClient” and “RelayFax” for Web-based e-mail, anti-virus protection capabilities and practical fax messenger; and “FTP Serv-U” for sharing and distributing files over the Internet. .
A look at the Inc. 500 by sector indicates that computer software and services dominate the rankings (38% of the 500).
The ranking is based on the percentage increase in sales from 1995 through 1999. To be eligible, companies had to be independent and privately-held through 1999, have at least $200,000 in sales in 1995, and their 1999 sales needed to exceed 1998 sales.
Inc. verified all the information using tax forms and financial statements from CPAs and by conducting interviews with company officials.
Deerfield maintains an office on Hastings Street in Traverse City for its development and technical staff. Within the last year, it tripled the size of its Gaylord headquarters.
