Marathon Automotive Expands
TRAVERSE CITY – Marathon Automotive is putting the finishing touches on a month-long expansion project at its location on South Airport Road. Owner Ross Schofield says he spent some $200,000 on new state-of-the-art equipment, plus acquired a neighboring building and land.
Schofield founded Marathon Automotive in Traverse City in 1980 and 12 years ago moved it to its current location near the main entrance to Cherry Capital Airport.
"We were running out of space and money is cheap right now," Schofield says of the project. "It just made sense to do it."
Included in the expansion: six new service bays for a total of 16, and the 4,000 square-foot building next door (former home of Pizzarama) for tire storage. The expanded space also includes a dedicated tire, service and alignment center.
Among Schofield's equipment investments is an ultra-precise balancing system that uses three separate lasers to measure the tire and wheel. He says the technology isn't available anywhere else in Michigan.
Plans to bolster his current staff of 15 are in the works to meet the demand for his expanded automotive services, Schofield adds.
In other automotive news, Lakeside Automotive in Traverse City is undergoing a remodel.
Owner Glen Gordon says he originally was going to expand at his Cass Street location but says Garfield Township made it cost-prohibitive. "Instead I could have purchased a whole new building and more land," Gordon says. "Just too much red tape so I'm staying right here and remodeling."
Lakeside Automotive, which specializes in foreign makes and modesl, first opened up on Cass Road seven years ago. BN
