More housing options with Bay Ridge expansion
TRAVERSE CITY – One local senior community will soon be expanding to provide more area residents with a safe and convenient housing solution.
The Village at Bay Ridge broke ground in mid-June on a two-building addition. When construction is complete in the spring of 2006, the three building campus will house almost 300 residents over age 55.
The first building will be a replica of the existing facility, which contains 120 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The new building will be called “Bay Ridge East,” while the original will be renamed “Bay Ridge West.”
Each apartment contains a full kitchen and all the amenities of traditional apartments. Each building will also provide community areas such as a library, exercise room, beauty salon, and dining room.
“It’s like a transition from not wanting to take care of your own home,” said Community Manager Linda Scott. “It’s a safe environment.”
The project is being funded by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.
The second building will provide assisted living for seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This project, the Bay Ridge Assisted Living Center, is funded by private donors. It will contain 50 studio and one-bedroom apartments.
The facility will be staffed 24 hours per day and residents will be provided with all of their meals, as well as laundry and housekeeping services.
“They wanted to do this from the very beginning,” Scott said of the assisted living community. “There is a need for more care in the dementia area.”
The Village at Bay Ridge prides itself on the independence it provides for its residents.
“People like to make their own choices,” Scott said. “They like the options here.”
Residents are able to choose from optional services, such as dinner in the dining room, housekeeping, and laundry.
The community employs a full-time social activities director who organizes activities from day trips to craft projects.
The Village at Bay Ridge is located at 3950 Scenic Ridge near Meijer. It can be reached at 929-9127.
