Munson Healthcare Breast Health Center Receives Accreditation

The Smith Family Breast Health Center at Copper Ridge, which is part of Munson Healthcare, has achieved national recognition for excellence: an American College of Radiology accreditation in stereotactic biopsy. The accreditation was the last step in the facility's quest to become a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

It is now the only facility north of Grand Rapids to be recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, says Dr. Charles J. Weitz, radiologist and director of Breast Imaging at the Smith Family Breast Health Center.

He says the Breast Health Center has been accredited in mammography for many years, but a year ago decided to pursue accreditation in all other modalities.

Why is accreditation so important? It assures patients that the center has achieved high practice standards in all of the following: image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs, says Weitz.

The American College of Radiology awards the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the College's voluntary breast imaging accreditation programs, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

The goal of the Breast Health Center is to enhance patient comfort, privacy, and peace of mind with services that include annual screening mammography, diagnostic testing, bone density testing, and breast biopsy.

The Breast Health Center is located on the second floor of the Northwest Michigan Surgery Center in the Copper Ridge Development off of West Silver Lake Road in Traverse City.
