New Digs for Long Lake students

TRAVERSE CITY – Construction of the new Long Lake Elementary School has gone "very well" and will wrap up on schedule next month, reports Paul Mahon, capital projects director for Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). The month of August will be spent moving furnishings and staff into the new building, which will be all ready to go come the first day of school on September 6, Mahon adds.

General contractor Grand Traverse Construction broke ground on the $9.2 million project at the end of the '09-'10 school year. Funding for the school was provided by TCAPS' bond funds.

The new 50,000 square-foot school building will house preschool and kindergarten through fifth grade students. Its layout is similar to Cherry Knoll Elementary, which was renovated by Grand Traverse Construction a few years ago.

Subcontractors on the project included Elmer's, Jacklin Steel and ABI Mechanical Contractors, all of Traverse City, and East Jordan-based Sky Electric.

The new school is located at 7600 N. Long Lake Road, adjacent to the former Long Lake Elementary. That building will now be used as a transition school site for at least the next five years, says Mahon. BN
