BANKING & FINANCE: North Country Bank opens second TC location – Cadillac and Boyne City next on roster

TRAVERSE CITY – The newest location of North Country Bank and Trust is 333 East State St., one block east of the Park Place Hotel. The first opened last February on U.S. 31 South by ABC Warehouse.

North Country Bank, headquartered in Manistique, continues to broaden its base in northern Lower Michigan. The bank opened its first Lower Peninsula branch office in Gaylord in September of 1998. Last year it opened offices in Traverse City, Petoskey, Mancelona and Kaleva.

It also announced the acquisition of two Old Kent Bank offices in Glen Arbor and Alanson that will be converted to North Country branches by the end of June. A Cadillac office is opening in the second quarter and a Boyne City office in August. “We’re well positioned in the hospitality business, large resorts and golf courses,” said Ronald Ford, Chairman/CEO. “We’re a good lender in that market and we know that business well. So now we plan to develop a cluster of branches around Traverse City. We think we’ll end up with a 15-branch network around here.”

Part of the bank’s State Street grand opening was a customer’s-choice donation of $25 to either the Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation, Cherryland Humane Society or Father Fred Foundation for opening a 5.50 percent Preferred Checking or CD of $10,000 or more before June 1. The bank also donated $10 to one of the charities for each customer who opened a North Country Lite Checking.

The bank is partnering with Munson to sponsor two major Munson fund raising events: The Leelanau Health Classic, a golf event supporting the Leelanau Memorial Health Center, and the Women’s Health Classic, with proceeds funding women’s health programs.

In other bank news, Daune Weiss has been appointed to the bank’s board of directors. She has operated the Holiday Inn in Gaylord since 1986 and has been very involved in the Gaylord area, including the board of the Otsego Co. United Way, the Alpenfest, Rotary, DDA board and the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. In 1987, she established the Gaylord Wish Tree Foundation to fill the needs of children in Otsego County.

Michael Witkop has accepted the position of Executive Sales Associate for the northern Michigan market. He has served as a member of the bank’s Northern Michigan Community Board and was formerly vice president/CFO of American Financial Mortgage Corp. in Traverse City. He is a Leadership Grand Traverse graduate and president of the Scenic Trails Council of the Boy Scouts. BIZNEWS
