Colour Us Northerners

REGION – Pittsburgh Paints has created a new line of paint for the home that's inspired by the northern Michigan region – and it was developed by area designers.

The Up North collection, which includes colors like Beach Glass Blue, Morel Mushroom, Farm Market Red, boasts 25 different colors. The concept was born from a color show held a couple of years ago at Northwood Paint & Supply in Traverse City. Dee Schlotter, national color brand manager of Pittsburgh Paints, was in attendance with upwards of 60 designers anxious to see new color trends. Schlotter says it took a while, but she eventually rounded up some of the designers she had met, and they selected a variety of moody, atmospheric colors reflective of the area.

"The colors tend to have a more softened look.," says Ann Freckleton of Design2 in Traverse City, who participated in the color selection. "We live in such beautiful area, and we like to bring the outside in."

Her partner, Rita Whaley, says the process was not an easy one. "It was challenging to project two or three years out what colors people will be using."

Northwood Paint owner Tom Bischoff said one of the best parts was naming the colors after they had been selected. "My wife and daughter and sister-in-law got a bottle of wine and came up with the names," he says with a laugh.

While the paints are available at any Pittsburgh Paints dealer, the swatches are available only at Northwood Paint & Supply in Traverse City and Complete Paint and Supplies in Harbor Springs and Petoskey. BN
