HEALTH CARE: Fitness System pumps up its presence

GAYLORD – After 17 years of servicing the Gaylord community’s fitness and exercise needs, Fitness System Inc. has broken ground for its new multi-purpose health club expansion.

“It’s great to be growing with the rest of the community,” noted co-owner Mary Ann Stempien.

Designed by architect Todd Seidell, the climate-controlled facility will mirror Gaylord’s alpine motif, complete with cathedral ceilings.

Centrally located on Gornick Avenue, the 8,000 square-foot fitness center is north of the Otsego County Sportsplex.

“Being near the Sportsplex is a perfect combination for us and a more natural and convenient place to serve our members,” Stempien commented.

General Contractor Larry Kent of Kent Construction targets a Sept. 1 opening.

Stempien said the health club will continue to offer the Nautilus-supervised program, along with access to the Iron Room of over 100 selectorized machines, free weights and cardiovascular equipment. For those with lower back problems, the Back Exercise System is available, featuring the only MedX Lumbar exercise machine in northern Michigan. Tanning equipment and sauna facilities will also be available.

Other fitness activities, such as step, interval, boxing and body-bar aerobics, are on the roster. In addition, racquetball, wallyball and half-court basketball are available for individuals and leagues. The Fitness System Jujitsu Club teaches the ancient art, as well as self-defense and street combat instruction.

The new building will also house chiropractor Ron Looney; the Rising Sun Karate Club; World Hairquarters, owned by Cliff Mapes, and a full line of exercise apparel and workout accessories.

Stempien said, “This is a big step for us, but we have a lot of faith in this community and our partnership with it.” BIZNEWS
