Roaster will hold “cuppings” at new grounds

TRAVERSE CITY – Great Northern Roasting Co. will roll out a 'cupping room' when they reopen next door to their current home-based operation near Chum's Corners.

Jack and Sarah Davis have been operating their wholesale coffee roasting business for five years out of their home just off U.S. 31 on E. Silver Lake Road. They recently purchased their neighbor's house and will relocate the business there in about a month.

Their new cupping room-similar to a tasting room at the wineries-will become an onsite training lab of sorts for clients.

"It'll function as a learning center for people we work with to come learn things about coffee," said Jack Davis.

Their clients-restaurant and coffee shop operators-are typically too busy during work shifts to learn about the roaster's specialty equipment and products.

"This way, they can get away from the distractions and get a knowledge base directly from us," Davis said.

They will also have a showroom with "very cutting-edge equipment" and specialty coffees.

"It will allow us to show off all the coffees we carry," he said.

Local clients include Burritt's, Oryana, Cuppa Joe, Village Bean, 310, Bubba's, The Dish, and more.

All of their coffees come from high-quality estates around the equator. They work with an importer out of Seattle.

"These are exclusive coffees. We are a small company with a global reach."
